Authors’ Bios:

Carey Corp:

NY Times & USA Today Best-selling author, Carey Corp, wrote her first book, a brilliant retelling of Star Wars, at the prodigious age of seven. Since then, her love affair of reinvention has continued to run amuck. Writing both literary fiction and stories for young adults, she begins each morning consuming copious amounts of coffee while weaving stories that capture her exhaustive imagination. She harbors a voracious passion (in no consistent order) for mohawks, Italy, musical theater, chocolate, and Jane Austen. Her debut novel for teens, The Halo Chronicles: The Guardian, earned her national recognition as 2010 Golden Heart finalist and more recently made the N Times Best-seller list. Coming Sept, 2015: Shades of Doon (book 3 of the 4 book Doon series), a young adult series loosely based on the concept of the musical Brigadoon, used with permission from the Alan Jay Lerner Estate & the Frederick Loewe Foundation, and co-written with Lorie Langdon.

Lorie Langdon:

Lorie Langdon is one half of the author team that writes the best-selling DOON series, a YA re-imagining of Brigadoon!, published by Blink/HarperCollins. She has longed to write her own novels since she was a wee girl reading every Judy Blume book she could get her hands on. So a few years ago, she left her thriving corporate career to satisfy the voices in her head. Now as a full-time author and stay-at-home mom, she spends her days tucked into her cozy office, Havanese puppy by her side, working to translate her effusive imagination into the written word.

Lorie’s first solo novel, GILT HOLLOW, a YA romantic thriller, releases September 2016!

Questions:

  1. I know you probably get asked this question a lot but…what made you two want to write a series “based” on the Brig o’ Doon?

LL: When I was sixteen I saw the musical Brigadoon and fell in love with the romantic tale of the village that only appears to the modern world once every one hundred years. But one thing always bothered me about the original – during the hundred years that the portal to the kingdom is closed, the people in Brigadoon sleep. Really? They sleep! I couldn’t stop thinking about what I could do with that hundred years…

  1. You may have never even thought about this question or you may have! Did you base Veronica and McKenna on yourselves? If so, who was who?

LL: Veronica and Mackenna’s friendship was inspired by our own. Carey and I, much like our characters, are opposite in a way that makes for a perfect balance. As writers, we each bring different technical strengths to the table.

Carey writes Mackenna and I write Veronica, but there are elements of each of us in both characters.

  1. Did you plan all of the books in the series out? Did you know exactly what was going to happen in each book? Or did you just write and see where it went?

CC: A bit of both. We had to give a basic plot of all 4 books to out publisher when we sold the series. However, as we wrote Destined for Doon we realized that the plot for book 3 had to change. Kenna and Vee’s friendship needed to be centric to book 3 and it needed to be tested.

  1. What was your favorite part about working together to write a series? Was it difficult?

LL: As you can imagine, one of the challenges of co-authoring is not having complete creative control, but this can also be an advantage because you have two brains instead of one!

The actual process of writing with a co-author is fun and dynamic. Splitting responsibilities such as blogging, promotions, and social networking is a great blessing. But the biggest advantage is that you have someone who is equally invested. Someone you can call at midnight with a brilliant plot idea, who won’t curse you out and block your phone number

  1. Have you ever visited the Brig o’ Doon?

LL: Only in our dreams. CC: And our research.

  1. What is your favorite book cover in the whole series? Did you actually picture Veronica and McKenna to look like the models on the covers?

LL: All the covers are stunning, but I think SHADES OF DOON is my favorite. I love that both girls are on the cover together and it has a Disney-esq feel! The cover models don’t look exactly like how we picture the characters, but close. They both did a fantastic job!

CC: Also the cover designer designed the Pippin musical revival poster for Broadway!!!

  1. Are you planning on writing more stories or series together?!

CC: We’re both working on individual projects right now. Lorie had a solo release in September, a YA mystery called GILT HOLLOW and has another book coming out in 2017. I’ve got a high school senior and am completely overwhelmed with college stuff. But something tells me Doon’s not done with us yet.

Giveaway:

An ARC of Forever Doon Forever Doon

With the witch of Doon on the throne, Jamie believed dead, and Duncan and Mackenna trapped in Alloway, Veronica has no choice but to put her grief aside and prepare her remaining followers for the impending battle against the false queen and her forces. But while on a covert mission to steal a powerful elixir from the castle, Veronica discovers her true love may actually be alive, and fighting a battle of his own.

Now that the Brig o’ Doon had been destroyed and the portal fragmented, Doon’s forces are not only divided, but also isolated in different dimensions. With the help of a storyteller as ancient as the witch herself, Kenna and Duncan learn they must rebuild the bridge to have any chance of crossing back into Doon with their ragtag army. But when Mackenna insists on fighting as well, Duncan soon realizes the only way he can ensure her safety is to turn her into a cold-hearted killer.

For Vee, Jamie, Kenna, and Duncan, saving their kingdom while keeping their lives intact will take a miracle.

  1. Heidi S. says:

Cool interview! I think I am definitely going to have to check out Forever Doon (if I don’t win the raffle!). It looks right up my alley! For musicals… where to begin?!?! That is the toughest question in the world for a lover of musicals. I think I’d have to say that the musical I don’t think I could ever tire of is Les Miserables! The musical I’m greatly looking forward to seeing where it goes is the new Anastasia which will be starting soon on Broadway since I’ve loved the cartoon since forever ago!!!

  2. Karis says:

Crazy, enough, I actually don’t listen to/watch musicals that much. I enjoy shorter ones like The Sound of Music, Dancing in the Rain, and Disney movies, but I’m not sure if they count. However, I really love the Doon series and have read all the books minus Forever Doon. Great interview, Haley! I’m jealous 😛
